About BureBure
BureBure is a small handmade felt studio in Lithuania, founded by Inga and Kęstas Samušiai in 2006 and still run by the same family today. Today, our children have also joined the work, so BureBure continues as a family studio creating felted wool footwear, sauna hats, accessories and special collaborative pieces from natural wool.
Our work began with felted wool slippers and boots, and footwear is still at the heart of BureBure. Inga is the third generation in a family of shoemakers: her grandfather and great-grandfather both worked in this craft. This family connection to footwear, materials and handwork is one of the roots of BureBure.
Over the years, our studio has grown into a place where old feltmaking techniques meet everyday comfort, sauna culture, design collaborations and historical reconstruction.
Everything we make is created by hand, only after the order is placed. We do not mass-produce, we do not keep large stocks, and we do not make piles of products that may never be sold. This means less waste, more thoughtful production and a more personal item for every customer.
Felt is slow by nature. A pair of slippers, boots or a felted hat cannot be rushed like a factory-made product. Wool needs water, soap, pressure, movement and time. Most orders take at least 1–2 weeks to make before shipping, and some custom or collaborative pieces may take longer.
We work with natural wool, durable soles, rubber and carefully chosen materials. When leather is used, we often choose leftover pieces from larger productions — pieces that might otherwise be discarded, but can become strong and beautiful soles for handmade footwear.
Felt is one of the oldest textile technologies. It has been used for thousands of years — from ancient hats and protective clothing to traditional warm footwear. This old craft is still practical today. Felted wool is warm, breathable and naturally helps with thermoregulation. It absorbs moisture, allows the feet to breathe and gives a gentle massage effect while walking.
Our studio also creates sauna hats and felted sauna accessories. Wool is especially suitable for sauna use because it helps protect the head from overheating while remaining light, breathable and natural.
Another growing part of BureBure is collaboration. We work with designers on limited footwear and accessory collections, and we also create pieces for historical reenactment and living history projects. One of these projects is the ancient Greek pilos hat — a simple but meaningful felted form known from the ancient world.
In the future, our shop will also include a carefully selected section for other makers. These will be high-quality handmade pieces created by skilled Lithuanian artisans whose work we truly respect.
When you order from BureBure, you are not buying something pulled from a warehouse shelf. You are ordering a piece made especially for you — by hands, from natural materials, using a craft that has survived for centuries.
